8 Week Courses

Each class  is  90 minutes long  and  taught  by experienced educators.

Group One

This class is designed for students in grades 7 through 8.

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  $85.00 – 8 week course

While this group is just beginning to come into their own as young adults, the opportunity to build a foundation for interaction with others, develop self-confidence and thinking creatively with theatre can be a bridge and the road to a successful future. During the 8 week course the students will study:

  • Voice and Movement —Learn appropriate physical and vocal techniques for performance preparation.
  • Intro to Improv—Develop acting behaviors through improvisation.
  • Character Development I—Create characters using techniques and bring characters to life.
  • Scene Work Technique—Rehearse, memorize and perform short scripted scenes
  • Props and Tools—Build characters within scenes while using props and costume pieces.
  • Practice self-discipline in rehearsal situations
  • Performance and Stage Etiquette—Experience self discipline in performance situations.

The final session will include a performance-level demonstration for an audience of family and friends.

Group Two

This class is designed for students in grades 9 through 12.

11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.  $85.00  – 8 week course

Young-Adult student actors in this group have  been introduced to the basics and are likely to have already appeared on stage in local productions. The maturing mind of the high school actor is ready to enhance “the basics” and be introduced to more complicated stage techniques, scene work and script interpretation based on context in the world around them. During the 8 week course students will study:

  • Voice and Movement —Widen the development of appropriate physical and vocal techniques used in preparation to perform.
  • Improv for Comedy & Drama—Enhancing acting behaviors through improvisation for playing in comedic as well as serious situations.
  • Acting Styles—heighten characterizations while employing motivation for behavioral change on stage.
  • Staging Technique—build characters within scenes while using props and scenery.
  • Script—Practice techniques for script memorization.
  • Exercise the importance of self-discipline in rehearsal situations.
  • Demonstrate self-discipline in performance situations.

The final session will include a performance level demonstration for an audience of family and friends.

Meet Our Staff

TED VALLEY – Executive Artistic Producer/ Director—Vertigo Theatrics.

Mr. Valley  has over 26 years experience in the performing arts. His performance credits include work on stage, television commercials, voice-over and independent films. He has owned and operated Vertigo Theatrics for over 12 years and he has produced and/or directed over 150 theatrical and     special events performances. His company, Vertigo   Theatrics, has a long history working in and giving back to the Flint community.

MARTIN JENNINGS – Instructor. Mr. Jennings holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Central Michigan    University,   where   he   majored   in  Educational  Theatre,  Speech,  English  and Reading.  He also  holds a  Masters Degree in the Art of Teaching  from  Marygrove College.  From 1981-2006 he served as director of theatre at The   Flint   Central   High   School  Fine Arts Magnet. Since 1975,  Mr.   Jennings  has directed,  designed  and  produced  over  130 stage  productions  for  young adults in school districts throughout Michigan. Many of his students have  pursued successful careers in theatre after graduation.  They have gone on to work at the college and  professional level as actors and technicians in theatre,  television  and  cinema.  It is his belief and passion,  theatre  can  play  an  integral  role in the promotion of successful personal accomplishments.
